Print Specs 101

Help MIGU, Help U

We prepare hundreds of quotes each month… some of them are simple and straightforward, while others can be kind of complicated. No matter the complexity though, there are a few specifications we’ll need to know for any quote so we can prepare the most accurate estimate for you, in the most timely manner:

  • Quantity(ies), and if there are multiple lots/what the breakdowns between lots are;
  • Panel or Page Count, if/when applicable for brochures and books—keep in mind that saddle stitch books have to have page counts in multiples of 4;
  • Dimensions, including Flat Size for pieces that aren’t bound books, and Finished Size;
  • Type of Proof (PDF/Hard Copy) and if Hard Copy, Number of Sets Needed;
  • Stock Weight, including whether it’s Cover or Text Weight, and Finish (Coated—Gloss/Dull, or Uncoated);
  • Ink, including any Pantone Colors, if applicable, and if it bleeds (if not specified we’ll assume it does);
  • Coating (Aqueous/Varnish/UV), if applicable;
  • Finishing/Binding including any special treatments like Lamination, Foil Stamping, etc;
  • Shipping Destination(s)

Some Extras

If there are any packaging requirements, like shrink wrapping or maximum carton weight?
If mailing, how many lists are there?
If preparing drop shipments, do you know how many drops?
If shipping freight, does the location have a dock? Are there any skid dimension requirements?

Plus any other details that may apply to your project—the more information the better!
